Ukraine! (Alternative title: Don't Panic)

This week, I have had this conversation repeated more times than I can count...

"What are you doing with your summer Abigail?"

"Actually, I'm doing something really exciting! I'm going to the Ukraine to-"

"THE UKRAINE?! You are going to a WAR ZONE?!?!"

Don't panic.

At the end of June, I will be travelling to the Ukraine with a team of 13 students and leaders to help run a summer camp. The camp is for students in the Ukraine who are studying English and want a chance to practice conversation skills and meet some native English speakers! The trip is organized by UCCF alongside the Ukrainian equivalent, CCX (which, interestingly, is pronounced SSR - I'm as confused as you are). We will also be joined by an American team who have organized the entire thing!

The camp looks really fun! There are workshops, outdoor activities, a talent show, a banquet, and, most excitingly, a chance to share the gospel! During the camp, we will be leading small groups of people in reading bits of the bible, predominantly John's gospel. Not only will this help the Ukrainian students with their reading, writing, and conversational English, but it will be a chance to introduce them to Jesus, potentially for the first time. As a Christian English student, the whole concept couldn't be better. I'm passionate about English, and I'm passionate about Jesus - what an ideal combination!

The trip will not only be a chance to teach the Ukrainian students, but I hope to learn more about God and His heart for the entire world as well. Often, it's easy to get caught up in our own little western lives. Whilst these things are important, it's critical we don't forget that there are other countries out there who God is desperate to be in relationship with.
1 Timothy 2:1-7 says that God desires all people to be saved, and that means Ukrainians too!

The camp takes place in Lviv, in the West of Ukraine, the conflict is in the East.

Here are some ways you can support the team in prayer:

  • Pray thanks that God has given us this amazing opportunity!
  • Pray that we travel safely to and from the Ukraine
  • Pray for the team leaders, for encouragement, energy and organization
  • Pray for the Ukrainian students, that they would have a really fun time at the camp, and that their hearts become hungry to find out who Jesus is!
  • Pray that cross-cultural differences (between us, the Ukrainians, and the Americans!) wouldn't be a hindrance
  • Pray that fundraising would go well
Jesus, in Acts 20:35, tells us 'it is more blessed to give than to receive'.
If you feel led, but by no means do you have to, it would be wonderful if you could support myself and the team in raising some money to go towards the cost of the trip.

I have a little fundraising page here and it would be fantastic if you could donate as much or as little as you wish. If you would rather donate to me in person or something, pop me an email at

Thank you so much!
